Quantifying TV White Space Capacity; A Geolocation-based Approach
نویسندگان
چکیده
The so-called “TV White Spaces” (TVWS) are locally underutilized portions of the terrestrial TV bands and occur as a by-product of the Digital Switchover taking place in most countries across the globe. Thanks to the very good characteristics of the TV bands in terrestrial radio communications, the exploitation of TVWS for localor regional-area wireless license-exempt networking, under a carefully established regulatory framework, is a very attractive perspective. This paper presents a generic methodology for determining the actual capacity of white spaces using a geolocation-based approach i.e. dynamic assignment of radio resources to TVWS networks according to their geographical location. This methodology is applied in a case study investigating a sample area in southeastern Europe and unveils a significant amount of access capacity which can be unleashed via TVWS exploitation.

Towards Dynamic Real-Time Geo-location Databases for TV White Spaces
Recent FCC regulations on TV white spaces allow geo-location databases to be the sole source of spectrum information for White Space Devices (WSDs). Geo-location databases protect TV band incumbents by keeping track of TV transmitters and their protected service areas based on their location, transmission parameters and sophisticated propagation models. In this article, we argue that keeping tr...

To maximise spectrum access opportunities for white space devices, incorporating real-time spectrum sensing with geolocation database is a promising approach to enhance detection resolution with reduced computation complexity. Advanced spectrum sensing techniques are needed to quickly and accurately identify spectrum occupancy over a wide frequency range. However, the stringent requirements fro...

As is known, to eliminate interference, the frequency reuse approach is followed in Digital TV planning similar to cellular network, avoiding the use of the same channel in two neighboring allotments. There are large areas where a certain group of TV channels are deliberately not used. They are called white spaces in TV spectrum (TVWS). Considering the great economical value of TV spectrum, it ...

In television white space networks, secondary users are required to query an authorised geo-location spectrum database (GSDB) in order to determine the vacant channels or white spaces. While recent development of the Protocol to Access White Spaces (PAWS) by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is intended to standardize communication between the GSDB and white space devices for sharing s...

Latest regulations on TV white space communications and trend toward spectrum access through geolocation databases relax the regulatory constraints on cognitive radios. Radio environment map (REM) is a kind of improved geolocation database and an emerging topic with the latest regulations on TV white space communications. It constructs a comprehensive temperature map of the cognitive radio netw...
